Do you remember welcoming your new baby? It was likely a joyous time full of anticipation. Maybe you were given a baby shower (or two) and you prepared their room, purchased clothes, and had a stash of newborn diapers (disposable or cloth) ready. You may have put your nose it their blanket anticipating the smell of your newborn.

Unfortunately not all Mama’s have this experience. I recently spent time with a new Mom…her baby was two weeks old. The mother comes from a life of prostitution and she did not have one stitch of clothing for her baby. Neither did she have a blanket nor any of the other “gadgets” we think necessities. By the kindness of some friends she now has two pieces of clothing for her baby and a blanket. I knew that disposable diapers were out of the question due to the cost, however, I was shocked to find that the baby wore nothing on her bottom. I thought for sure she would have a makeshift washable diaper, but to my utter surprise she did not. After vising this woman I spent time with another young mother of a 16 day old. She too did not have any diapers. I have since learned that MANY babies do not wear any type of diaper at all…their mothers simply don’t have the means.

Belanesh and new baby

Can you imagine the smell of those little babies? I can guarantee it isn’t the baby powder or Johnson’s lotion smell we might associate with a baby. Also, imagine the extra work for these already downtrodden ladies just trying to survive.

Here is how you come in….do you like to sew? Do you like the thought of a well-tended to baby bottom? Do you have a heart for those that Jesus loves? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions you can either make (Pattern Here) or purchase (new or gently used) water-proof diaper covers for these Mama’s and their babies. We can purchase fabric here in Ethiopia for the actual diaper portion and have a tailor make them, however, the outer cover that will protect the baby’s clothing from being soiled is not available here.

Thank you so much for your care.
